Lindsay Shepherd Olive was born in Florence, S.C., in 1917. He received his Ph.D. in botany from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1942. He was on the faculty of the botany department at Columbia University, 1949-1968, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1968-1982.
